Spark your students curiosity as they read about any topic in any content. Students will want to know more about the content because of their own curiosity. When giving students an article/text, divide up the sections into 5 different ones to make the "Sum it Up" section easier. This is a great preview activity for new content or a way to extend your students's learning in the content you are currently teaching. Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including its relationship to supporting ideas; provide an objective summary of the text.
Cite the textual evidence that most strongly supports an analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
By the end of the year, read and comprehend literary nonfiction in the grades 6–8 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.
