This is a weekly assignment I give to 4-5 fifth graders a week. This assignment asks the student to find a news story that interests them. They will read it, take notes about it, form an opinion about it, write a 1 paragraph summary, and 1 paragraph opinion about it. The student then presents their work by reading their summary and opinion, and then leading a class discussion about the article.
This is an incredibly fun and enriching assignment that my kids LOVE to do!
This includes the instructions with check boxes, which includes a built in grading rubric. This makes it easy to grade, and the student has clear expectations of what is expected for the assignment. The second page includes question prompts for their reading notes. I suggest you copy front to back :)
This is a great way to work in reading informational text, writing to inform, social studies, and presentation skills.
I do suggest that you walk the whole class through all the steps with an article of your choice, and provide examples that they can access while they complete the assignment. This initial guided instruction is the 1 hour teaching duration.
