Add some interest to ANY novel at any point in the year, and you can also become the history teacher's new best friend! Students will connect major motifs in their novel to current, meaningful events. This fully editable product includes an assignment checklist, a brief vocabulary review, a graphic organizer, and a grading rubric.
I typically use this product as my back-to-school initial writing assignment for a dystopian summer read for MS students (this summer was House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer). I use it to teach students how to construct a powerful paragraph before moving on to the full essay. However, it can easily be adapted to suit your grade level and needs. Additionally, I use this assignment in conjunction with teaching MLA format, quote embedding, and credible source selection. Though this product does not include information on those topics, there are many awesome free and paid resources on TPT.
Note: The CCRA standards are included for 9th grade, but this product can easily be aligned with other grades.
Hope you enjoy this activity and getting your students thinking critically! Cross-curricular always is a plus for the lesson plans!
