In order to meet the CCLS in a science classroom, we must have students doing more reading and writing. What better to read and write about than real science events currently in the news! This assignment will ask students to locate a newspaper or magazine article, read it, complete a write-up, and present the knowledge they gained to the class. I use this assignment to begin my class every day. I simply create a calendar and assign one student per day from each class period alphabetically over and over again for the entire school year. Not only does this help my students meet the CCLS, but it also creates rituals and routines that students can follow to begin the class each day!
