Product Description
Are you looking for a way for your students to connect what they are learning in your class to what is happening in society? This assignment will fulfil that need!

I taught many different high school classes for several years and I looked for ways to help my students to connect to what they were learning. I eventually created this assignment and it helped to answer the questions, "Why are we learning this?", “Why is this important?”, “When are we ever going to use this again?” This assignment can be used in ANY high school or middle school class AND with ANY article!

What I love about THIS reference sheet is it has very specific guidelines so students can write their own current event. This means you only need to print it once and have students keep it in their binder so they can use it all year long – no more copies are needed!

HOW I USED THIS PRODUCT
Towards the beginning of the year, I introduced this assignment and told my students that they would be connecting one current events article to the content they were learning during each unit (or chapter, if that is what you use). For each unit, students found one current events article that related to that unit and they followed the assignment guidelines.

You could have students complete one or as many current event assignments as you would like! What's great about this assignment is you can modify its use to fit your individual needs!

The assignment has students:
- Find a relevant article
- Summarize it
- Define at least 3 key terms
- Describe the importance of the article
- Relate the article back to our current unit of study

I made their Current Events Assignment due the day before their unit test. We took about 10-15 minutes of class time the day before the test to have students share their current event with the class and we talked about how it relates to the current unit of study. Although not included in the rubric, I always had students who were willing to share. You could take student volunteers, randomly choose students to share, or you could assign specific students to share their current event for each unit.

WHAT IS INCLUDED:
- One-page teacher guide with suggestions on how to use the product
- Two-page student handout that describes how to complete a current event assignment.
- List of suggested news sources (included in the student handout)
- Easy to use grading rubric
- Student Example to show students how a completed current event assignment should look
