The project was designed for world history, but could be adapted to several subject areas quite easily. It can be a "break" and departure from required curriculum, or can "tweek" it a bit. Before assigning topics, I make a list of problem issues that are as current as possible. For example: War in Syria, ISIS, North Korea, devastating environmental disasters - oil spills, nuclear melt downs. There is usually (and unfortunately) plenty of bad news to go around. Students research - I tell them "Start with today and work backwards to ensure the most current information". They create a presentation (PowerPoint, Prezzi, etc.) and must present their findings to the class. I keep these presentations fairly formal so they practice their public speaking. Student assignment hand out and grading rubric included.
