As the fairy tale unfolds, situations students encounter word problems involving elapsed time, capacity (pints, quarts, and gallons), weight (ounces and pounds), and length (inches, feet, and yards). They add, subtract, multiply, divide, compare, and solve multi-step problems.

The sixteen-page original story, "Jack and the Beanstalk: An Adventure in Customary Measurement," is provided in two grayscale formats: full-size (8.5 x 11 inches) or in a half-size foldable version. Answers are also provided.

  • Convert inches to yards to see if Jack has enough rope
  • Calculate elapsed time to see how long Jack has to wait for breakfast
  • Subtract mixed measures to see how much the beanstalk grew
  • Convert pounds and ounces to determine how many trips Jack needs to make
  • Calculate elapsed time to find out how long Jack has to eat his breakfast
  • Convert pounds to ounces then multiply to find out how much Jack's gold is worth
  • Convert gallons to cups to determine how much punch was in the vat
  • Convert pounds to ounces then multiply to find out how much Jack could earn each week from the hen's golden eggs
  • Calculate elapsed time to find out how much time Jack has to study for his measurement test
