Customary Measurement Problem Solving with Amazing Animal Facts
I used this with my 5th grade math class to conclude our unit on customary measurement and they loved it! The problems are similar to extended response questions they might see on a state-test, but my students didn't even realize it!
First, students read an amazing animal fact and then there is a multi-step word problem related to the animal fact. I had my students use calculators and work in partners to solve the problems. These could also easily be used at a math center for students to complete independently.
Lastly, you could use the problems one at a time as a "problem of the day," warm-up problem, or early finisher problem.
On the full version, when students complete the problems they can scan the QR code on the answer sheet to self-check their work and answers (methods to solve the problem and answers are included on the answer key). A printable answer key is also included.
On the full version, if students finish early there are two extension options- one involves researching an Animal on National Geographic Kids and creating their own word problem for a classmate to solve, the other involves researching and comparing two animals. My kids were totally engaged and looked forward to even continuing the extension options in a future class.
