I am implementing customized learning for my new 8th grade class. They come from 6 different elementary schools, and they don't all need to learn the same things when it comes to writing. I created this spreadsheet to use when analyzing their writing samples to figure out what skills they each need to become better writers. I mark the sheet with M = Meets, PM = Partially Meets and DNM = Does Not Meet for each skill. Then I group students for instruction based on what they need to learn. By using this sheet, I've been able to use class time wisely, and the students know that what I'm teaching them is what they are having trouble understanding. It has made my writing workshop mini-lessons more productive, and I can see if the lessons are working when it comes to their own writing, whether it's a narrative or an essay.
