This activity is hands-on and brains-on! Students will test their understanding of how water molecules behave as energy is added or removed before, during or after a phase change. When they are done, students will have a beautiful 2-page wide chart displaying information about water as it changes state. The chart can also serve as an excellent tool for review, as the word strips are hidden under flaps that the students can open or close.
In this activity, students will:
-Cut out pictures showing water molecules at different phases and temperatures
-Cut out word strips stating how the molecules are behaving at any given point before, during or after a phase change, and how the temperature is or is not changing
-Place the pictures and word strips in the appropriate spaces on their chart.
-Check with their teacher before gluing (recommended, but optional)
-Temperature does not change when a substance is changing phase.
-Molecules move faster or slower depending on their energy.
-Molecules change their structure or formation during phase changes.
-Energy can be added or removed to cause temperature changes or state changes.
-"Shape" of the phase change graph of water.
-Freezing point and boiling point of water.
-Two-page wide phase change chart
-Pictures to cut out
-Word strips and flaps to cut out
-Instructions for students, including "At Home" instructions for students who are absent
-Copying instructions for teacher
