29 long vowel pattern picture sorts help students learn to listen for the difference between long and short vowels. These wonderful cut and paste activities help students come to the general understanding that when they hear a short vowel, they use one letter, and when they hear a long vowel, they pick a pattern.
Students cut out the pictures, sort and paste them on each side, then write the correct word on the line next to the picture. The guides at the top of the page help to scaffold the students' success.
The sequence of instruction of these cut and paste activities is slow, comparing a short vowel with a long vowel pattern and then the same short vowel with a different pattern. After all the patterns are introduced one at a time, the long vowel patterns are then matched with each other. The sequence starts again with every short vowel.
This book was created to complement the developmental spelling instruction found in books like Words Their Way and Word Journeys, and is perfect for word work/ literacy centers or morning work!
The wonderful thing about these cut and paste book is that they combine picture sorting (phonemic awareness practice) with spelling (phonics), so you hit both important skills at once.
Regular picture sorts do not always contain pictures whose spellings are appropriate for the skills being practiced. But these books are the best of both worlds. Not only will your students practice the appropriate phonemic awareness skill, but their phonics/developmental spelling needs are also targeted!
