This is a powerpoint presentation for reviewing the natural matter cycles (water, phosphorus, nitrogen, and carbon), how these can act as limiting factors in the environment and impact population growth. The presentation includes embedded questions to allow students to made predictions and analyze scenarios to help make the presentation more student directed.
I have used this presentation after students have explored the cycles of matter (see cycles of matter foldable in my shop). The first several slides are just graphics of the cycles - I ask the students to identify key processes, what they've learned, questions they have, and why that cycle is critical to the survival of organisms. I give them 5-10 minutes to discuss these and then they report out as the cycle is projected. This allows for pointing out processes, making connections they have difficulty with, and assessing their understanding.
I followed this lesson up with an activity where students select a company or individual that is affecting these cycles in either a positive or negative way, research the effects, offer alternative actions based in scientific knowledge and evidence, and actually mail their letters (see campaign writing activity in my shop).
