Cylinder Shake is a way for students to use a real cylinder to play a
math game. The students and teacher need to bring in cylinders
from home. The teacher will need to have 2 sided color chips or use
the paper ones provided.
Put the chips inside the real cylinder and shake them up. Let them
fall out of the cylinder. Students will move the chips to the tens
frame. Then they will notice how many of the chips are red and how
many of the chips are yellow.
Use one of the 2 options to record your information.
I like to print the cylinder card 2 sided with the number bond cylinder
behind the chips. Students will record their data. ___ red and ___
yellow make ____. Then in the bottom of the cylinder they write the
equation that goes with the recorded information.
If your students aren’t able to flip the card over and remember the
collected information, then you may want to print the sheet that has
the ten frame cylinder and the number bond cylinder side by side.
The extending step for this task is to graph the data you collect. Use
the graph to record the data for 10 different cylinder shakes!
