D-Day Primary Source and Film Comparison

D-Day Primary Source and Film Comparison
Product Description
Students will read about the background of Operation Overlord and D-Day. They will then choose a primary source reading from a soldier involved on D-Day and answer a few questions about him. You could also differentiate this, by giving some of the easier reading to your lower readers. The class will then watch the opening scene from the Band of Brothers episode "Day of Days" (8-9 minutes) and the opening scene from "Saving Private Ryan" (10-20 minutes; teacher discretion). They will then compare what they read to what they watched and answer one summary question after looking at a strategic map of D-Day. The clips are graphic in nature and occasionally language, so please view, edit, etc. before watching. Obviously, if you have access to these clips on a DVD, Blu-Ray, or any better streaming service than Youtube that would make the experience better for the students! Students really seem to enjoy this, especially since it hits on different learning types and is always engaging.
