Almost all history classes at least touch on the Enlightenment and some of the crucial ideas that come from it. It can be difficult, however, to make these ideas concrete and real for students. In this handout, I included three questions that encourage discussion about the ideas of separation of powers and the social contract. Students look at artifacts related to NSA wiretapping as well as airport body scanners and craft arguments for discussion about whether these practices violate the social contract. A discussion rubric and sentence starters are included do facilitate discussion.
