Although not a full DBQ, using an excerpt of James Madison's Federalist #47 will afford young historians the opportunity to contrast excerpts from recent State of the Union addresses from 3 recent presidents. Further scrutiny will allow them to compare the addresses. Tyranny? Let the study begin!
This close reading assignment can be used with document analysis worksheets (not included) and can be either a graded or non-graded assignment. The ideal would be to reproduce the document slides and have groups circulate. A two day lesson would allow full comparison and contrast to take place, however, this could be a standalone lesson.
