This modified DBQ will have students examining how the presidents following Washington honored or conflicted with his advice concerning foreign affairs. The "hook" is a quick look at President Carter's boycott of the 1980's Olympics and then a background essay reviewing the major policies of Adams through Monroe. Then follows 5 primary source documents, one for each of the first five presidents and their major issues. The Whiskey Rebellion, the XYZ affair, the Barbary Coast Pirates, the War of 1812 and the Monroe Doctrine. Students will be asked to write on the question: How did the decisions of these early Presidents honor or conflict with Washington’s precedents and advice? This can be done as an essay or short answer. Answers will vary. This activity can also be used to get through the first 5 presidents quickly if time is a consideration as it focuses on just the major issues of each.
