This is a modified document-based question and essay (DBQ) that has been edited to allow students to practice incorporating additional outside information. I have taken the DBQ questions from the June 2010 US Regents exam, which focused on the Progressive Era. I have added additional questions to help students “think ahead” as they complete the DBQ to reinforce the skills of incorporating information beyond the provided texts. I have also tried to structure the work so that students can understand how the documents are constructed and ordered to help them with the essay.
I have had students complete the documents in one class period and then given them one additional period to complete the essay.
I have also included rubrics that I use for grading their DBQ and thematic essays.
Lastly, I have included a cheat-sheet of all the US history exam essay topics from 2004-January 2018. I use this reference sheet when looking at past Regents for class examples and essay practice.
