Looking for a high quality DBQ addressing the role of business leaders of the late 1800's? Then this is the product for you! While teaching this topic, I found a number of free DBQs available online, but found them all lacking because they did not include enough documents to allow students to make a real choice as to whether these business leaders were "captains of industry" or "robber barons". To remedy this problem, we created our own!
This DBQ includes a background essay to set the stage for the DBQ, a hook activity to prime student thinking, and 12 documents. Documents vary between political cartoons, charts, primary source texts, as well as secondary articles. Political cartoons include QR codes that students can scan with their device to analyze in more depth and color!
Analysis questions (and answer keys) are provided for ALL documents. Two possible answers to the DBQ questions are available through the documents and three "bucket" or "reason" categories are suggested for each option.
Depending on how you approach teaching DBQs and the ability level of your students, you could go through the entire process together in class (which would take about two weeks) or assign part or the entire DBQ packet to students to do independently.
