PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Cold War was a global rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union based on economic and political ideologies. This DBQ topic looks at the Cold War and its effect on international relations through the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the Warsaw Pact, the U.S.’s National Security Council, Nikita Khrushchev speeches, and military technology. This DBQ includes more than just the United States and the Soviet Union but also Cuba and Fidel Castro’s ideals as well as the situation in Hungary and the Hungarian Revolution.

The DBQ packet has 9 pages total including six primary or secondary source documents – sources include three images, one map, and text from U.S., Soviet, Cuban, and Hungarian sources – with constructed response questions followed by an essay question using the documents.

This Document Based Question (DBQ) was created for 10th Grade World History. It could also be used as a review for the New York State Global History and Geography Regents exam. It follows the format of the New York State social studies testing requirements for writing DBQs.

An answer key is included for grading the DBQ.

I created this DBQ for my Global History I course. I knew this would be useful as it combined primary and secondary sources with analyses of maps and images. It does take considerable time to create these but I do know that they provide a strong outlet to apply the particular lesson involved. I hope you find them useful as well! Please leave feedback on your students’ ability to complete the tasks involved in this DBQ.

I’ve left the DBQ as a Word Document so that you can add more space for writing answers as needed.

SAVE MONEY! This DBQ is included in my Document Based Question Pack: The Cold War.

This DBQ addresses the Common Core State Standards. It has been updated with a page outlining the English Language Arts/History/Social Studies grades 9-10 as outlined at http://www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy/RH/9-10 and http://www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy/RH/11-12.
