good...happy...run...nice...These words are so overused! Each year I do an activity with my students where they have to "bury" these dead words and ban them from their writing. Students are given a tombstone to write the dead words on (run, happy, good, etc.). Then we place our dead words tombstones in a shoe box and bury them outside.
Afterwards, students use a thesaurus to find better words to replace these words. Students keep this sheet in their writing folders to use as a reference if needed.
This is such a fun way to expand students knowledge of words. With the "burial ceremony" kids always seem to remember and continue to use those better words.
