PRODUCT 1:

DECIMAL NUMBERS PLACE VALUE {INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK COMMON CORE}

WHAT

This unit has everything you would like to teach on working with Decimal Numbers. I am a great advocate of using interactive notebooks in math class, although I have realized, as with any method, if repeatedly adopted, it is vulnerable to the subtle process of ever encroaching habituation. Hence the unit has a perfect blend of interactive notebook activities, task cards and interesting games. Also included is an end of unit 3-page test to assess taught content.

WHO

The interactives are especially great for the academically challenged as they break down complex material into learnable chunks. The task cards perhaps provide a break from the monotony and cater to the high achievers who want something more challenging and needless to say, the games are what everyone enjoys.

SUGGESTED USE

I start off by introducing the topic through a starter activity prior to general instruction and follow up with the interactive activity sheet. The left side of the interactive notebook incorporates students’ reflective thinking on the lesson instruction and interactive template pasted on the right side of the notebook. Students’ reflections generally comprise of the learning goal, what they know, what they have learned and example of evidence.

I personally feel, the interactives are a great way to introduce a concept and this can be followed up with more challenging tasks outlined in task cards, project work or worksheets.

SUCCESS RATE

Students love the interactive activity sheets. I have seen a great improvement in terms of attitude and performance in the most reluctant. Wish we were taught in a similar fashion back in the good old days :)

CONTENT

1. Decimal Place Vocabulary: six flap template to record mathematical terminology used when working with decimal numbers.

2. Common Core ‘I Can’ statements to be pasted in notebook

3. Bulletin Board Display: word cards, meaning cards and number cards that can be arranged on a bulletin board to show students the decimal place value of numbers. This is also useful for students to read decimal numbers accurately in their place in the decimal place value chart.

4. Decimal Place Value: one activity sheet to record the place value of decimal numbers from 12 decimal (word form) cards.

5. Identifying Tenths and Hundredths: a single activity sheet to write decimal numbers of visual representations of tenths and hundredths; a six flap template to show visual and number representation of decimal word forms.

6. Modelling Decimal Numbers: accordion style template to model numbers in decimal form, fraction form and word form from pictorial representations.

7. Value of the Underlined Digit: a 12 flap template to record the value of the underlined digit in a given decimal number.

8. Comparing Decimal Numbers: six individual 3 flap template to compare numbers using the correct sign (< > or =).

9. Ordering Decimal Numbers (Ascending Order): accordion style (vertical) three individual templates to record given numbers from least to greatest.

10. Ordering Decimal Numbers (Descending Order): accordion style (horizontal) template to record given numbers from greatest to least.

11. Fractions to Decimals: 8 flap foldable template to convert given fractions to decimals.

12. Decimals to Fractions: 8 flap foldable template to convert given decimals to fractions.

13. Write as Mixed Numbers and Decimals: 1 x 12 flap template to write given decimals as mixed numbers; 1 x 12 flap template to write mixed numbers as decimals.

14. Decimal Addition: 8 flap foldable template to write addition problems vertically and solve.

15. Decimal Subtraction: 8 flap foldable template to write subtraction problems vertically and solve.

16. Decimal Multiplication: 10 flap template to multiply decimal numbers. Students show their working out on the flaps and write the answer under the flaps.

17. Decimal Division: 10 flap template to divide decimal numbers. Students show their working out on the flaps and write the answer under the flaps.

18. Decimal Rounding: 8 x 4 flaps square template to round decimal numbers to one, two, three decimal places and round to whole numbers.

19. Decimals on a Number line: one activity sheet and two individual 3 flap template to identify decimals on a number line.

20. Task Cards Challenge: 20 task cards featuring different skill concepts on decimal numbers.

21. Decimal Place Value Matho game: one activity sheet with three game boards and 15 game cards to play a game similar to BINGO.

22. Decimal Number Value Game: 36 game cards for whole-class participation.

23. The Same Game: 28 game cards to practise identifying decimals and fractions that have the same value.

* All games come with instructions to play.

* Answer sheets to all learning activities are included. This is especially handy, as answer sheets can be displayed on the interactive whiteboard for students to self-check. This saves you loads of marking, besides it is an invaluable learning moment as students take note of their mistakes.

* Table of contents included to make navigation easier.

* Interactive templates are designed to be time-saving as they feature more learning content and minimize on unnecessary cutting.

* Test answer sheets can be displayed on the interactive whiteboard or printed for students to self-check their answers.

* Two separate PDF files uploaded in one compressed file; the main file contains photographs of assembled templates and answer sheets after each interactive activity sheet and task card, the second file contains just the interactive activity sheets, task cards and bulletin board displays in case you would like to print without the answer keys and photographs.
