Product Description

There are over 250 decodable words included in my ‘Race Car Decodable Roads’ resource. The road pieces are sorted into 5 differentiated sections.

The differentiated levels consist of:

Section 1- Short vowel sounds for all 5 vowels. The words in this section are mostly CVC words with some ck and floss spelling rules endings and a few plurals. Simply remove the words that are not relevant to your students- if this has not been explicitly taught.

Section 2- Words containing digraphs- sh, ch, th, wh

Section 3- Words with beginning blends

Section 4- Words with end blends.

Section 5- Words containing silent final e.

Please note: Some words included in this resource are nonsense words. I find it valuable to expose my students to nonsense words to see if students are applying their understanding of rules/ concepts, rather than relying on their memory- reading by sight.

Preparing: Print, laminate, cut, PLAY

To play: Simply make a track using the decodable words (appropriate for ability). Pick a car and race along the track reading the words as you go. Other ideas: Time yourself on your track. Can you beat your previous time? Roll a dice and add that many words to your track. Turn over a road piece, reading the word to your partner and adding it to the read. Then race the toy cars along the road to finish. These are just a few ideas. They could share out the pieces of road and make a silent final e track, a beginning blends track and a digraph track etc.
