PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Create/Design an app in Google Drive to add to a collaborative and INTERACTIVE iPad themed Google Slides presentation! This product turned my 2013 unplugged Design an App Project into a completely digital and collaborative writing activity. Great for 1:1 classrooms OR schools that have access to Chromebooks or laptops.

It is important to note that this project exercises and fosters innovative thinking for app IDEAS that solve a problem in a student's world. Students will not be creating a functional app.

Students will design an app icon in Google Drawing for an app idea that will help alleviate some sort of problem. They will add their app icon to a collaborative Google Slides presentation that contains an image of an iPad on the title slide. Students will hyperlink their app icon to a different slide within the presentation (directions are included). On this slide students will type a description of their app and include how much they would charge if it were to appear in the App Store. Each slide contains a "home" icon that will take you back to the main slide. A "camera roll" app already appears on the title iPad slide that links to a "camera roll" slide. Here students will take a selfie to add to this slide. (Think of it as the author's page). Once all of the students have added their selfie, app icon and writing description, they can put the presentation in presentation mode to present. The hyperlinks in this presentation will make it very interactive!

What is included?

Directions in Google Slides: Step-by-step directions are included! Three YouTube video tutorials I created are embedded into the slides to go along with the directions. Launch this on your board to walk through together as a class OR distribute to your students for them to follow independently. Video tutorials cover:

•What the finished product will look like and how it will operate
•How to use Google Drawing to design an app icon
•How to save & download as a png file
•How to import the app icon and resize into the collaborative Google Presentation
•How to hyperlink the app to a specific slide
•How to take a selfie to add to the "camera roll" slide

App Planning Page in Google Slides: Give each student their own copy of this template to complete before starting the project. They will answer 6 questions:

• What kind of problem will your app help solve?
• Who will your app help?
• What will your app do?
• What will your app cost?
• What will you name your app?
• Other ideas?

App Design Template in Google Drawing: Give each student their own copy of this template. They will watch the video tutorial embedded in the directions presentation that will show them how to use some of the tools to design their app icon. They will save their app icon as a png file before importing to the collaborative Google Slides presentation.

iPad Collaborative Presentation in Google Slides: Share the link to the collaborative presentation. Students will take turns adding their app to the iPad that appears on the title slide. They will also add a description to their assigned slide that they will link to their app icon. Students will add their selfie to the camera roll slide.

Editable Grading Rubric in Google Slides: A 30 point grading rubric is included. Just add your grading criteria to the 6 text boxes and print! Slide is already set to print on 8.5x11 paper.

Final Project example: An example of a completed project is included for you to show your students before they begin.

Embedding Directions: A slide appears in the main directions presentation that tells you how you can embed the final presentation(s) to your class blog/website.

App Project Links in Google Slides: All of the links to the items mentioned above come in one Google Slides presentation. This download will contain a PDF with a link that will take you to this view only presentation slide. When you click on each link you will be prompted to Make a Copy. Rename the file to whatever you would like. It will be sent directly to your Drive! Disperse to your students via Google Classroom, Google Drive Shared folder, your Learning Platform, etc..

ALTERNATIVES to the collaboration portion of this project:

•If you have a large class size, you might consider breaking your class into groups and providing each group with their own iPad Google Slides presentation link. This will allow both their app icon size and selfie size to be larger. Then each group could present their interactive iPad to the class!

•Although I created this activity for the collaboration component, you could opt for students to work on their own iPad and create multiple apps. They would need access to multiple copies of the Google Drawing template. Or, they can create each app, save it and then redesign a new app all within the one Google Drawing template.
