DESKTOP PUBLISHING - Part 1 Activities: "Introduction to Design Principles" - is the 1st "Set of 5 Activities" in a total of 30 activities that the author has developed as part of this comprehensive desktop publishing unit. All of the desktop publishing activities that the author has written are from the course curriculum she has developed for use in her own classes; therefore, each set becomes progressively more difficult as students progress through the various parts.
Before implementing this set in your class, it is important that students are presented with the fundamentals of publishing by viewing the PowerPoint that we offer on this topic, receive instruction from you about your expectations and use of the hardware and software in your computer lab, and then proceed to creating what is available in this set (Activities 1-5). These activities take them through a step-by-step process of introducing them to some very basic concepts of publishing. As they progress from one set to the next, students will continue to build their DTP skills while applying the basic principles of design.
Throughout all of our 30 DTP activities, students create a variety of different flyers, brochures, forms, logos, programs, newsletters, etc. while working with graphics, tables, and numerous other formats. If students have Photoshop and other powerful software packages available in your classroom, the sky is the limit as to what they can achieve in creating graphics to include in these activities.
These activities bring out the creativity and imagination of students, and they are FUN! How quickly they learn, how much they learn, and how well they learn it all depends upon YOU - their desktop publishing teacher - and your expertise. These activities are only here to help you with the process!
All of these activities have been created using Microsoft Office 2010 (Windows version), which is what the author currently uses. However, these activities can be easily modified for MS Word 2013, MS Publisher, and other publishing software. The author (who has taught publishing in several secondary schools) has experience in using Publisher and QuarkXPress with her own students, and she has used these same activities. All of Education Get Real's materials are copyright protected to protect the author's intellectual properties. However, it is relatively easy for desktop publishing students to make the adaptations when using these materials in the classroom with whatever software is provided.
A FREE suggested timeline/lesson plan is available here on our website which may be of help to you when implementing these activities.
The activities in this "Package of 5" include:
->1: Short Report with Proofreader's Marks
->2: Create Your Personal Letterhead
->3: Jewelry Store Letter with Coupon
->4: Art Show Flyer with Pictures or Clipart
->5: High School Art Festival Invitation
->In addition: Each package also includes Teacher Instructions for Implementing the Activities plus the Rubric for that "Package of 5"activities.
The author of our desktop publishing offerings is a secondary teacher who has taught desktop publishing for several years, has helped students create several student desktop publishing businesses in secondary schools (she is the sponsor), has written much of the curriculum (English- and Business-related) offered here in our store on TPT, has created professional desktop publishing materials for local businesses and school systems, and she is the publisher of TPT Education Get Real materials here in our store.
