Dictation is a wonderful tool for improving your students' grammar, spelling, punctuation, vocabulary and listening skills! DICTATION DONE RIGHT for SIXTH will also teach them the author's craft through editing (capitalization, punctuation and spelling) and completing dictation from passages of literature that they have read, or will read, this school year.

**The weekly dictation passages are part of Sonlight Curriculum's Core G Language Arts program.**

Each week your students will independently complete three easy steps as they prepare to listen to and write their dictation.

1. Dictation Worksheet: The dictation passage is presented on this sheet. Your students will read through it; highlight the capitals in one color and the punctuation in another; then consider which words are difficult to spell; circle those words and write them on the Words to Practice sheet.

2. Words to Practice: This is a self-testing tri-fold that your students will use to practice spelling and note new punctuation rules. They will write all the difficult words on one side of the tri-fold. Then complete the pre-test by saying the words to themselves and trying to spell them. Any words that are not spelled correctly on the pre-test should be worked on during the week.

I have found MY SPELLING NOTEBOOK to be a wonderful tool to help children practice correct spelling. It is a phonemic spelling system that enables you to track and systematically correct their spelling struggles. You can use it with any spelling program, or simply with your student’s daily written work.

3. Punctuation Practice: Here your students will exercise their editing skills. The dictation passage is again presented, but without capitalization and punctuation. Your students will insert all the capitalization and punctuation (ending punctuation, commas, quotation marks, apostrophes, dashes, hyphens, and ellipsis) that are missing. In addition to missing punctuation and capitalization, each passage contains six misspelled words that your students will find and correct. An answer key is provided.

Again, if your students do not correct the spelling accurately, note the words in their MY SPELLING NOTEBOOK to ensure they practice/master them.

When your students have completed the Punctuation Practice sheet they will check their work with the Dictation Worksheet.

**BONUS**: There are 55 Punctuation Rule Cards included in this pack. They will help your students understand why, when, and how to capitalize and punctuate each passage.
