Learning Objective

This digital journal will help learners engage with text by using different reading strategies such as summarizing, comparing/contrasting, identifying the cause & effect, making predictions, looking for context clues, making inferences & more.

Description

This digital reading response journal in Google Slides™ is a great way for students to track their reading while working on writing. I created this for Mandie T. who uses the reading workshop model in which students are taught a skill during a mini lesson. Students then take this skill and apply it to their independent reading and type a response in their journal using the skill with their own book.

Digital graphic organizers are included in this resource to help students brainstorm for their written response if needed. Students also have the option of creating their own graphic organizers in Google Drawing™.

This resource for Google Drive™ comes as 10 different slides. However, the slides are intended to be duplicated as many times as needed throughout the year.

Slide 1: Cover page (students add their name)

Slide 2: Directions for duplicating slides

Slide 3: Option 1 for reading response (students type the name of the skill at the top of the slide. This skill will be covered in two different responses. Then they will start on the left hand side of the notebook for their first entry as they type the date, name of their book/chapter they are reading and type their response.)

Slide 4: Option 2 for reading response (students type the name of the skill at the top of each notebook page. They will start on the left hand side of the notebook for their first entry and continue typing the date, name of the book/chapter they are reading and type their response.)

Slide 5: Map It (main idea vs details, character map, etc) Graphic Organizer

Slide 6: T-Chart Graphic Organizer

Slide 7: Flow Chart/Sequencing Graphic Organizer

Slide 8: Compare and Contract Graphic Organizer

Slide 9: Cause and Effect Graphic Organizer
