Stages of Disease
1. Incubation (entry to when you feel sick)
2. Prodromal (first symptoms)
3. Acute (most severe)
4. Recovery (start feeling better)
5. Convalescence (end of sickness and feeling better)
Symptoms of Infectious Diseases

Many microorganisms are effectively transported in the atmosphere

Pathogen are organisms that can cause disease

HOW TO TREAT THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF GERMS

Bacteria
Viruses are easily spread from one person to another. Viruses are incapable of reproducing on their own, and must invade a host cell in order to use its genetic machinery for reproduction. Few medications to treat viruses.Examples are the common cold, influenza, measles, hepatitis B virus, and chicken pox, AIDS, hepatitis A,B,C, herpes.
What is a VIRUS?

Preventing Viral Diseases
An important tool that helps prevent the spread of many viral diseases is vaccines.
Vaccine: a substance that stimulates the body to produce chemicals that destroy viruses or bacteria
A viral vaccine is made from weakened or altered viruses. Because they are weakened, the virus does not cause the disease. Instead, they trigger the body’s natural defenses.
Some vaccines you might have had are polio, measles, and chickenpox.

Fungi
Organisms that get their nutrition from other living organisms or dead organic matter. Fungi can be found in the air, on plants and in water. With fungi, there are good guys and there are bad guys. We use some fungi to do things for us, like make bread rise and brew beer.
Examples are yeasts, mildew, thrush, ringworm, mould on bread and athletes foot.

Entamoeba histolytic : causes dysentery, a severe form of amebiasis associated with stomach pain, bloody stools, and fever.
Parasites

How can you prevent the spread of diseases caused by microbes?
#1 - Wash your hands.
Body defenses!
The immune system
Phagocytes (white blood cells: eat up foreign cells)
Inflammation = the bodies response
defenses-
Skin, sweat, hair, mucous membranes, cilia.
Lymphatic system
Lymphocytes B and T cells (white blood cells)
Produce antibodies
Vaccines (immunization schedule)

Unfold and cut the top layer along the three fold lines. This makes four tabs.

Label the tabs as shown.

Under the appropriate tab, summarize what you learn about each type of pathogen.

WHAT ARE VIRUSES
What is a VIRUS?
Viruses are easily spread from one person to another.
Viruses cannot reproduce by themselves. They infect other cells and take over their reproductive machinery in order to reproduce.
They multiply inside the ‘host’ cell and when they have used all the cells reproductive machinery, thousands viral cells burst out of the cell. The host cell is completely destroyed.

Preventions
There are currently NO CURES FOR ANY VIRAL DISEASE! However, there are some medicines that you can take to relieve symptoms of a viral infection. They just make you feel better until your body can kick into virus-kicking gear. The best treatment is Resting, drinking plenty of fluids, and eating well-balanced meals may be all you can do while you recover from a viral disease.

Bacteria Viruses
Fungi
Large plant like structures which lack chlorophyll. Need to absorb nutrients from whatever they are growing on
They can also be harmful if they steal nutrients from another living organism. Examples include, mould on bread and athletes foot which is caused by a group of fungi known as dermatophytes
Fungi can be found in the air, on plants and in water

Protists
Entamoeba histolytica
Causes dysentery, a severe form of amebiasis associated with stomach pain, bloody stools, and fever.
Preventing the spread of disease
Don’t spread the virus or bacteria around!
Cough and sneeze into your sleeve or a tissue
Avoid others
Wash your hands with soap frequently
