Teach Thematic History using Crash Course Season Two Worksheets
Fans of Crash Course World History appreciate its humorous approach to telling in chronological order the story of human history. To really understand history in all its beautiful complexity, however, it’s also essential to take a thematic approach that spans many eras, looking for patterns and commonalities.
That’s what the second season of Crash Course World History does. Instead of dealing with a single historical event per episode, it tackles a major historical force in each episode, showing how that force changed human history over centuries and millennia. Season Two covers issues such as disease, money, war, climate change, drought, energy, capitalism, democracy, and peace movements. This will give your students a much deeper understanding of not just what has happened in the past, but why events unfolded as they did. And that deeper understanding, of course, will equip your students to better understand the world in which they live!
Season Two is definitely thematic, but it also contains some episodes that DO tackle a limited historical era. These episodes cover events and issues that got limited (or no) coverage during the first season. OR, they cover events that were emphasized during Season One, but in much greater depth, with an eye toward understanding multiple perspectives. Episodes of this type include ones about Israel & Palestine, Iran, WWI, WWII, the Vikings, Japan, industrialization, and Asian responses to imperialism.
Why Students Love World History Crash Course Season Two
Few classroom strategies are as successful as this simple approach: make learning fun! That, or course, is easier said than done, but when it comes to teaching history contents, the YouTube series Crash Course World History Season Two is a great place to start.
The script of each episode is packed with humorous observations about life and culture -- ones that help to make strong points about the history being communicated. Just as importantly, the host, John Green, has what it takes to keep students' interest: enthusiasm about the topics, a quirky way with props, and a funny, sometimes deadpan delivery of content. Students like watching the series, which means they pay attention to it and learn!
Each episode of Crash Course contains about 10 minutes of content plus a brief time for the credits. Episodes are available for free on YouTube at the following playlist:

What You Will Get for in these Crash Course World History Series 2 Worksheets
For each episode in this packet, three resources are provided:
- A student worksheet without timestamps
- A student worksheet with timestamps showing at which point in the video the needed information is presented
- A full context answer key:
o This contains the student questions, the answer(s), and the timestamps for each question.
o When I thought it could be useful, the answer keys also provide teachers with additional relevant information to help them provide more context for their students.
o Teaching ideas related to specific issues are also embedded in the answer keys.
- Plus, for may of the episodes I have also created map worksheets, with of course full answer keys also included!
In addition to the above, you will also get a full page of lesson plan ideas to help you use the worksheets in a variety of ways, so that you can vary your lesson plans and keep student engagement high! There's a lot more you can do than the standard, show the video and then have students work on the worksheet. These lesson plan ideas will help you mix it up in class!
TEACHER CONVENIENCE FEATURES
All worksheets are provided in both condensed and large-format versions to help teachers have everything they need at their fingertips! With the large format versions, your students will have plenty of room to write their answers. With the condensed versions, you'll save both on paper and on time spent making printouts or copies!
STUDENT ENGAGEMENT FEATURES
The worksheets aren't all in the same format -- I like to mix it up to keep student interest as high as possible. That's why some of the worksheets are true/false, some are free response, and some are fill-in-the-blank. I used whichever format best seemed to suit the content of each individual episode.
In addition, every worksheet also includes discussion, research, or application tasks to help students personalize the historical or cultural information in each episode.
AND, some of the worksheet sets also include a map worksheet to build those geography skills and provide students with the context they need to better understand the history they're learning!
