My math lessons focus on student engagement and participation. I focus on developing conceptual understanding using manipulatives, specific language and activities. My lesson plans also include differientiated tasks that cater to the varying levels in the classroom.
1) To understand two ways of dividing; equal sharing and equal grouping
2) To use mathematically specific language when talking about dividing, and to use manipulatives to give context and meaning to the operation
3) To use partner talk to clearly convey your understanding verbally
Some of this is review for students. Although students have been taught these skills in earlier grades, many do not have a firm grasp of the concepts.
These skills also lay the foundation for dividing with decimals and fractions.
Student talk will be used throughout the lesson to access prior knowledge and provide scaffolding for those students without the needed prior knowledge.
