An excel spreadsheet that allows the teacher to enter their class (max 30) and a matching exercise key with up to 20 matches. The spreadsheet randomizes the matching exercise for each student and answer cell turns blue when correct. The student must correctly type in the correct answer (found in the answer bank) for each description (randomly assorted). When the student opens the spreadsheet, they will type in their name and the spreadsheet will populate a random, but unique to that student, order of the original matching exercise created by the teacher. The yellow cells are where students need to enter their answers. If the student correctly types in the correct answer (yes correct spelling is important), the cell will turn blue. In my experience, this helps engage the student in the exercise. While they could help each other, they can't simply copy the answers of their neighbor, because their neighbors spreadsheet is different. Students also seem to be challenged to get the cells to turn blue (either because they like to make the colors turn or they don't want other neighbors to see all yellow answers). Since the cell turns blue, the student gets immediate feedback, and if their answer is wrong, they can check to see why their answer is wrong and correct it without penalty. It's also easy for the teacher to gauge the progress of all students, since one can stand and observe computer screens from across the room and be able to tell which students may be struggling or are not engaged.

This does require some setup for the teacher. First, their is a sheet named Students where the teacher must select that tab, then go to the home toolbar and select format, then unprotect sheet using the password "students." This will allow the teacher to then enter up to 30 names (first, last, nicknames, etc). Students will type these names into the spreadsheet when they receive the assignment which is how the spreadsheet randomizes the assignment. When the names have been entered, the teacher should protect the sheet so that students can't change.

Next the teacher must go to the Setup sheet, unprotect the sheet with "setup" password, and enter in two columns the key for up to 20 matching items. When entered, the Setup sheet should be protected again to avoid student access (although they can only mess up their own file).

Next, the teacher will share the file with students. For example, I typically use google classroom. The students do need to open the file as an Excel file, but Google will make it difficult. The first several times it will take a little effort for the teacher to make sure everyone is downloading the file and opening using Excel. Students only need to be on the Main sheet for the assignment. If students don't correctly open, the file will open in google sheets, which won't allow the cells to turn color. Also, when they are done, they need to save their files and submit them electronically. I think it is important for students to experience saving and submitting assignments electronically. Google classroom makes it easy for the teacher to see who has submitted the assignments and, since the files are shown as thumbnails, you can see which have been done correctly without having to open every one.
