This "DIY SPANISH CAMP" details absolutely everything you will need to deliver a week-long, half day Spanish Camp for students of all Spanish-language levels! With a small investment up front, you can use this camp again and again for spring break, winter break or summer break Spanish Camp.

The theme for this Spanish camp is, "A Virtual Trip to Mexico, the Americas & Spain."  Students will embark upon a virtual travel adventure to four popular Spanish-speaking destinations:  MEXICO, COSTA RICA, PERU, and SPAIN.

The recommended duration of this Spanish Camp is five days with 3-4 hours per day of camp. The camp activities are appropriate for all elementary-aged school children, Kindergarten - 6th grade. I recommend a minimum of 10 students, but no more than 20 per camp session.

Teachers of this camp should be proficient in Spanish but not necessarily fluent. Because this camp is not simply a language camp, the focus is on the richness of culture of some of the most visited Spanish-speaking countries around the world. Teachers should be well prepared to talk about the countries on the itinerary in detail and ideally, prior travel to some of these countries is helpful in order to generate excitement and enthusiasm for travel and to foster a student’s genuine interest in learning Spanish as a second language.

With each day of Spanish Camp you will find the following:

- A list of materials that you will need and where to find them, (just click on the link)!
- Specific instructions for preparing for each day of camp!
- Links to YouTube videos representing cultural information for each destination!
- Step-by-step instructions for running your camp!
- Teacher Tips!

DAY ONE - Getting ready to go!

Before embarking on our journey, our young "viajeros" (travelers) will get ready to travel by packing a virtual suitcase and creating a passport that will allow them entry into each country on our itinerary.  Upon arrival, viajeros will receive local currency that they will use to purchase boarding passes for travel by air, boat, bus and train.  At each destination they will learn about the local culture, create arts and crafts, and learn Spanish vocabulary and phrases.

Day One Take Home:
- "Hacer la Maleta" activity covering Spanish travel vocabulary
- Personalized passport to be used throughout the week
- Travel journal used for each day of Spanish Camp

In Mexico, we will create colorful sombreros and learn the Mexican Hat Dance, or the “Jarabe Tapatío!” Our viajeros will learn about the famous Mexican artist, Diego Rivera, and create a mural based on one of his well known works of art.  We will also make guacamole from scratch following instructions completely in Spanish.

When we arrive in Costa Rica we will talk about the biodiversity of this beautiful country, a favorite destination of many North American tourists.  Students will create a replica of the colorful "carreta" (oxcart) used back in the day to transport coffee beans from the farms to market. Students will also learn about the beautiful bird, the toucan, found throughout Costa Rica, and specifically about a toucan named Grecia who lost its colorful beak in 2015 in a terrible accident. As an optional activity, make a traditional bean & rice dish called, "Gallo Pinto," using a simple recipe or have students try delicious Costa Rican coffee!

Finally, we'll make Peruvian "Chicha Morada" (recipe and YouTube link included).
