This lab is a simple way for students to extract the DNA from a strawberry. The long thick fibers of DNA store the information for the functioning of the chemistry of life. DNA is present in every cell of plants and animals. The DNA found in strawberry cells can be extracted using common everyday materials. Strawberries are great for this type of lab because each strawberry has eight copies of the genome, giving them a lot of DNA per cell (most organisms only have one genome copy per cell).
