I use this research project as a part of the DNA Fingerprinting unit in my upper level Forensic Science class. Social justice is an important component of crime scene investigation and offers an alternative view of our criminal justice system, as students are learning about the science behind CSI. Students will visit the Innocence Project website where there is so much information, in multiple formats. You will need computer lab access, possibly headphones (to listen to the videos in a group setting), copies of the research document for students to complete as they read the information and research one particular case, as well as instructions for the project and the rubric for assessment. I typically allow for about 2 weeks for the research portion (we have limited computer access in our school) so my students have to do some research on their own, and then 1-2 days for presentations to the class. It is an informative and engaging process and students have often mentioned that it was one of their favorite assignments to do! I have provided the forms in both word documents that are editable and pdf for easy printing.
