Product Description

Worksheets and directions for an activity that helps students understand the process of DNA replication at a very basic level. Introduces students to the idea nucleotide pairings, and the ways that the double-helix structure of DNA makes it possible to create two copies of one another. Also introduces the ideas of genes, and includes directions to have a simple and fun classroom activity where students "assemble" their own DNA sequence of several traits, and then try to decode classmates' codes in order to find the original creator. The worksheets wrap up with a quick informational text and reading comprehension assignment about genetic mutations. In my middle school classroom, the connection to mutations is perfect, because when putting together the DNA sequence, it's about a 100% probability that at least 30% of the students messed up their own DNA sequence, and I don't even need a Punnett Square to figure out those odds!

A great way to show kids how DNA replication works, rather than just doing notes about it.
