Using this project, students will find articles that not only interest them but that also relate to classroom content during a DNA and Protein Synthesis Unit. I usually prompt students to use this as an opportunity to find articles that cover something that they are passionate about or curious about. For example, I've had students find articles about biotechnology ethics when it comes to finding and sequencing DNA of crime suspects left at places such as restaurants without a search warrant. I've also had a student bring in an article about Ernest Hemingway's polydactyl cats because she also owned a polydactyl cat.
Students find these articles and complete two paragraphs, one in which they summarize the contents of the article and the other in which they expand upon the contents of the article because of their knowledge from class.
An example written by myself when this was created (2011) with the article and an example use of the rubric is attached as well.
