A fun way to introduce genetic traits is to have the students observe their own bodies compared to their classmate’s traits. This gets them excited about their unit on inherited traits as part of MS-LS3-1 or HS-LS3. They use the chart to observe six dominant and recessive traits while walking around surveying their classmates. I have found that students of all ages get very interested in this which leads easily to introducing Punnett Squares and allele percentages.
