There is a stronger focus on decoding a variety of letter patterns in this phase. The magic e discrimination set is particularly good for targetting phonemic awareness of short and long vowel sounds and the ability to differentiate and blend.
Phases 1 to 3 are the foundation phases that are critical for literacy development. My intervention kids love this game and it gives them the constant exposure that they need to succeed and move on to more complex letter clusters. You can mix the cards in all three phases to target skill deficits. It can be a quick game or you can extend it according to the directions. Either way, you'll have your groups asking to play it over and over. That way you get the repetition that some students need and the motivation to engage with print.
I would teach my intervention group first, then add games to a Literacy Centre. Your RTI group can teach others and it will boost their confidence. You can differentiate by including games at a variety of levels.
This is a very simple game for kids to learn and the fun element appeals to all ages. If you like these I recommend my SWITCHEROO games which also develop phonemic awareness but have more strategy. They are particularly good to address a dyslexic learning profile.
I have used a DYSLEXIA FRIENDLY FONT to include all learners.
