Each set has 26 cards (13 matching roots) and a DONKEY CARD. Familiarity with Latin and Greek roots helps develop a student's vocabulary and word knowledge. It also helps with decoding and comprehension as students recognise similar letter patterns in new words. This knowledge can extend into spelling ability with practice.

I have continued with the Farmyard theme and, as usual, there is no relationship between the farmyard pictures of animals and the word on the card. This ensures that students decode the print and do not bypass the words to guess from the picture.

The games are based on the old card game of DONKEY and the fun element for players is trying to avoid the DONKEY card at the end. It is a quick game in its traditional format, but older players like to extend the life of the game by only taking on a letter of the word at a time. The first time they lose, they take on D, then O, and so on, until one player loses 6 times, and they are the DONKEY.

I also use it for players of mixed ability by varying the game format. Players put their pairs in the middle of the table when it is their turn. All players say the words and the roots. You can also include more players by combining sets of cards, but you will only need one DONKEY card.

I specialise in foundation literacy and numeracy skills and use games to provide a fun element and the motivation for students to play over and over. I have taught for 30 years and you might find this helpful if you are designing RTI or differentiating:
