I used these assessments as a guide to improve student reading progress with group and individual instruction.

DRA Focus for Instruction Interventions & Data Sheet (Lower & Upper Elementary):

After giving the DRA Assessment to each of my students I fill out the classroom data sheet placing student scores in the appropriate boxes. I evaluate student performance, their strengths and weakness in the various reading categories. I then form targeted reading groups to improve student reading skills and use the DRA Focus for Instruction Intervention sheet to guide my instruction in the areas students need.

Letter Recognition; Nonsense Words; Phonemic Segmentation Fluency Practice Assessments:

These assessments are given to our lower elementary students three times a year and decide whether students will receive Title I services. I use these sheets to practice these skills with students in whole group, small group and individually. It gives students an opportunity to practice the skills they will have to do on the assessment.

Students are given only 1 minute to do each assessment. On the Letter Recognition Assessment they must read as many letters as they can in one minute. On the Nonsense Words Assessment they must read as many words has they can in one minute. Students may sound out the word or just read it. O the Phonemic Segmentation Fluency Assessment students are told the word and they must sound out each sound. For example: Teacher says the word; cat; student must say each sound that word makes c – a - t. If I am assessing students formally I record each of the students scores on the data sheet provided each time an assessment is completed. This also guides my instruction and shows me what my skills students need to improve upon.

Student/Teacher Reading Conference:

I have included two different reading conference sheets I have used with my students. The first fits more with the DRA instruction and the second I made up when using the Daily5/Café program.. Both work well for assessing students reading progress. If I am formally assessing students I chart their progress on the data sheet provided.
