Resource Directions & Uses: Use these assessments to guide student reding progress with group and individual instruction.


DRA Focus for Instruction Interventions & Data Sheet (Lower & Upper Elementary):

After giving the DRA Assessment fill out the classroom data sheet placing student scores in the appropriate boxes. Evaluate student performance, their strengths and weakness in the various reading categories. Target reading groups to improve student reading skills and use the DRA Focus for Instruction Intervention sheet to guide instruction in the areas students need.

Letter Recognition Practice Assessment: This assessment is given to lower elementary students three times a year and decides whether students will receive Title I services. Students practice this skills in whole group, small group and individually and it gives them an opportunity to practice the skills they will have to do on the assessment. Students are given only 1 minute to do the assessment and must read as many letters as they can in that one minute.

Nonsense Words Practice Assessment: This assessment is given to lower elementary students three times a year and decides whether students will receive Title I services. Students practice this skills in whole group, small group and individually and it gives them an opportunity to practice the skills they will have to do on the assessment. Students are given only 1 minute to do the assessment and must read as many Nonsense Words they can in one minute. Students my sound out or just read the words.

Phonemic Segmentation Fluency Practice Assessments:
This assessment is given to lower elementary students three times a year and decides whether students will receive Title I services. Students practice this skills in whole group, small group and individually and it gives them an opportunity to practice the skills they will have to do on the assessment. Students are given only 1 minute to do the assessment and are told the word and they must sound out each sound. For example: Teacher says the word; cat; student must say each sound that word makes c – a - t. If assessing students formally, record each of the students scores on the data sheet provided each time an assessment is completed. This also guides instruction and shows what my skills students need to improve upon.

Student/Teacher Reading Conference: Two different reading conference sheets. The first fits more with the DRA instruction and the second using the Daily5/Café program.. Both work well for assessing students reading progress. If formally assessing students chart their progress on the data sheet provided.
