A Directed Reading-Thinking Activity (DRTA) emphasizes concept and vocabulary development, as well as comprehension. During the Pre-Reading Map the teacher questions the students inductively in order to assure successful reading of the story. This discussion leads to the students using the map to predict the theme of the story. The students then read to determine whether the theme is evidenced in the story and/or to confirm or reject the Reading Macro Concepts. Next the teacher guides the students to discuss their predictions and major theme of the story to create the Post-Reading Map. Oral Re-Reading is incorporated by students locating and reading parts of the story that support answers given during the comprehension discussion. Finally the students complete the Prompt.
