Think Sheet PBS Nature: What Plants Talk About
PBS Nature Video or Live Streaming has produced a 52 minute intriguing view of research being conducted on the premise, is plant behavior similar in purpose to animal behavior?
This 20 question think sheet allows an engaging way for your students to follow the studies and make predictions about future research in this area.
Although based on extensive, valid research conducted in North America a number of studies look at plant behavior viewed in comparison to animals.
Several species, ecosystems, and interactions are examined. These include complex feeding behaviors; and foraging behaviors of roots; the chemical language of the Dodder vine in relation to the tomato; and wild tobacco defense strategies.
When Montana rancher’s livelihoods are threatened with an invasive plant that seems to destroy everything the cattle feed on, it becomes a serious issue for the survival of the ranchers as well as the native grasses. Kinship studies as well as underground ecosystem relationships are also explored.
