Complete 35 weeks of Spelling Words, Practice, and Assessment Pages! In this comprehensive spelling unit that focuses on phonograms and word families, your students will have multiple opportunities to interact with their spelling words and demonstrate their understanding in different ways on their weekly assessment. Weeks can be taught out of sequence; however I have ordered them to start with easier short vowel words that progress to more difficult phonograms and blends. Each week will focus on 1-2 spelling patterns for 8 words of the same sound and 2 sight words for a total of 10 words a week.
Each week includes:
ABC Order: Students will cut and paste 7 of their words for the week in ABC order. Everything you need for a print and go center, homework, or morning work.
3 Times Each: Students will trace each of their 10 dotted spelling words and write them 2 more times on the lines provided. (Lessons 30-35 only have students write the word one more time so the words can fit in the space provided) This can be used in a center, for homework, or morning work.
Rainbow Writing: No new idea here, but I have provided a Rainbow Writing code and Rainbow Writing practice page. I staple a color copy of the code in their center folders as well as post a copy at the actual center. You could also use this for homework or morning work each week.
Word Cards: I have made small word cards designed for a pocket chart or to post on your whiteboard. The spelling pattern is in red and underlined so students can remember what their focus is for the week. As I printed each week, I also labeled them on the back in pencil with the week number. I paperclip them together and store them from year to year in order. This helps a little with the organization for the next year!
Word Lists: These lists have each spelling word typed that is great to post at each center for word work. This ensures students are not up out of their seats because they can’t “see” the spelling words. This can also be copied and sent home to inform parents what words are being studied for the week.
Weekly Spelling Test Paper: This is my favorite part of the week because I can really see the different ways my students learn. Each paper has 10 lines for students to write their spelling words as I dictate which words to write. The next section is a sentence dictation that includes at least 3 of their weekly spelling words, along with other sight words and CVC words. These dictation sentences are provided for you on the Teacher Week by Week guide that you will receive with this pack. These are just suggested sentences, but my student’s enjoy hearing the sentences every week because they are usually kind of humorous and tend to rhyme because of the spelling patterns/word families that are selected. The last part of the spelling test consists of students independently reading a sentence and then illustrating what the sentence said. You can learn a lot about your students and their strength and weaknesses, just by a simple spelling test!
Also included in this pack is:
An editable version in Publisher of the weekly spelling test, 3 times each worksheet, ABC order worksheet, word cards template, and word list template. My hope is that if a certain weeks words are not what your students need you can still use the same format to fit your needs.
A Teacher Week by Week guide is also provided listing each spelling word and suggested dictation sentence for the test on Friday.
