If you are tired of starting your English language arts classes with a boring sentence to be corrected, if you are tired of vocabulary programs that just do not increase word knowledge, and if you are looking for a way to incorporate and repeat ELA standards in your classroom, then this book is for you! It provides three daily , components for your students for each day of the school year: vocabulary, editing practice, and standard practice. Daily Dose cannot only get students busy at the beginning of class; it can increase their vocabulary, reading, and writing skills. Each day, using Daily Dose, students can enter your room and immediately begin working on the following:
1) Word of the Day, or WOD: Memory experts tell us that mnemonics, or devices that help us to anchor concepts in our minds, are the best and easiest ways to remember things. This book provides one word of the day for the first one hundred days, the word’s part of speech, the pronunciation, the definition, and a mnemonic link to help students remember the word and its definition.
2) Edit Sentence: Actually, it is not just a sentence. It is a story broken up into daily portions. Each day’s portion contains grammatical errors that students must find and correct. This story continues throughout the school year.

This book also contains review games and activities, tests, ideas on how to incorporate words of the day in student writing, and a sample word wall card.
Here is how we use this resource in our classrooms:
We print 8 Daily Doses to a page, front and back. Each student keeps this page, which has 8 days worth of bell ringer work, in a folder. The folder stays in our classroom. We project the day's Daily Dose on our Smart Boards at the beginning of class each day, and students come in and immediately grab their folders and complete the day's Daily Dose. This year, we are having our students write their word of the day in their interactive notebooks. They write the word, definition, and mnemonic "think of" on the right side of the notebook and draw a picture to help them remember it on the left. Once this is done, they correct the sentence on their Daily Dose handout, and then complete the standard-based question. We usually give students about six minutes to complete the work. Then, we go over it, spending a little time each day to talk about the word of the day and how to remember it. We tell students to correct any mistake they made in editing the sentence as we go over it and to make sure they change the answer to the standard question if they answered it wrong. Once the eight "doses" are complete, we take the page up and grade one at random. We tell our students that they never know which one we will grade so they need to make sure all are completed correctly. We stress that they all should make a 100 since the answers are given when we go over it each day!
Daily Dose is a fun bell ringer! Students will gain interest in and laugh at the "edit story" as it progresses and learn new vocabulary in an unforgettable way! It is one of the best resources that we use in our classrooms!
