Daily Fix-Its
These are DO NOW activities to use as a bell ringer to the start of class for Divergent by Veronica Roth. It gets students editing and proofreading while also staying on topic with the text. The quotes come directly from the text. Students will receive the quote from the text with errors, and teacher has the fixed version to share after students complete. These can be written on the board by the teacher or copied onto a white board program such as a Promethean or Smartboard. Just copy the fix it to project, or cut the answer key and provide a copy to the students to fix on paper. For this activity students will identify who said it, how it is pivotal to the chapter, and fix the errors, without looking in the text. Find an example of the first chapter below. Great for getting students COMMON CORE ready by analyzing text as well as grammar and spelling.

Fix It

My cheek’s warm. I get up and dust my self of. A few people stoped when I fell but none of them offered to help me. There eyes follow me to the edge of the hallway. This sort of thing has been happening to other’s in my faction for months now—the Erudite have been releasing antagonistic reports about Abnegation and it has begun to effect the way we relate at school. The gray cloths the plain hairstyle and the unassuming demeanor of my faction are supposed to make it easier for me to forget my self and easier for every one else to forget me to. But now they make me a target.

Fixed
