Come together as a class to defy the forces acting upon us!
There are three daily challenges to defy gravity, buoyancy and friction.
It is a fun, exciting and engaging supplement to the Forces unit.
These three challenges can be done as a class or in groups.
Egg Drop Challenge:
The goal is to scaffold your students into designing a "parachute-like" design to defy gravity and slow the egg down. Most students tend to create a "body-armour" for the egg. It is a great way to get students to be creative and cooperative.
TIP: Drop the eggs yourself (over some newspaper or protective surface just to be safe) to prevent any unwanted yolk splatter.
TIP: Bring in an extra egg for each group just in case there are accidents during the design phase.
Aluminum Boat Challenge:
Get each pair to design a boat using just aluminum foil.
ALTERNATIVE: you can use something other than pennies/more or less aluminum foil. This one is easily adaptable
Friction Car Race:
Get creative with the surfaces that they can use for their ramps (e.g. carpet, slime, velcro, wool, etc. and even allow them to combine surfaces on their ramp)
Time the cars for extra-competitiveness
