In my classroom, we use these combined with a Kagen Structure (mix pair share). It builds community while allowing students to gain ideas in three rounds of 20 seconds to share and exchange ideas.
This resource has helped my kids build writing stamina while practicing paragraph format daily. I give them 6 minutes to write after our mix pair share so daily we can compare how much is getting completed and they can see themselves growing.. which is super motivating for them. I have seen their command and ability of paragraph format improve greatly when we write daily and they use the topic sentence, detail, elaboration, and closing sentence format with their own personal ideas before adding in text. These prompts lend itself easily to prompts that have multiple details to encourage paragraph writing.
This could be done with younger pre-writing age kids even as morning meeting questions or discussion starters!
This PDF has 30 different writing prompts and one page that outlines writing expectations.
