I believe daily warm-ups and spiral review are extremely important when it comes to helping students be successful in math.
I start off the year with place value, so I start out daily math reviews with place value questions. These place value warm-ups can be used in a variety of ways. For me, I usually set a timer for about 5-7 minutes. My students pick up a warm-up sheet as they walk into class (or it is up on my smart board) and they know to get straight to work in their math journals.
I usually go over the warm-ups right after and I vary out the way I go over the warm-ups throughout the year to keep my students engaged.
- 7 week's worth of place value reviews
- Student self evaluation
*Students will draw a specific smiley face after answering each question. This has been a very powerful tool as they reflect on their own learning. This will also give you, as the teacher, a quick assessment
- A mental math section (I usually read these out 3-4 times)
*I have seen my students’ mental math grow throughout the year with practice!
- Teacher key which highlights important concepts
*I hope the color coding can help guide you in really hitting the important concepts of each warm-up question that aligns to the standards
**I would greatly appreciate an honest review! Leave a comment!**
