Start each math class off with a word problem that has a historical connection to the date!
This document includes a unique math problem for each day of the month of December. Some are short and simple, while others are longer and/or require multiple steps. A variety of skills will be practiced by your students over the course of the month, including:
• line graph
• scientific notation
• measures of central tendency
• unit conversions
• and more
These problems can be used to practice short response and extended response answers, if desired (give instructions accordingly).
The topics vary from historical figures and events to pop culture, including the following and more:
♦ Montgomery Bus Boycott
♦ chewing gum
♦ Leaning Tower of Pisa
♦ Louisiana Purchase
♦ Wright Brothers
I have used these problems in my classes and the students enjoyed them. In fact, they’d ask for it on the rare day when I’d forget to put one up or when it was not in the day’s plan!
Download the preview to see examples of the three types of problem formats. Every problem is given in a continuous document, two per page for distribution of half sheets, and individually for projection onto the board, giving you options for presentation to your students.
