I created this journal as a warm-up activity for my fourth grade students to complete every day as they unpacked. Students answer each open-ended question in a paragraph and my students' answers helped me get to know them as writers and people. I actually opened each language arts period with a discussion of their responses. First, the students shared with a seat partner and then I allowed students to share their responses with the class if they chose. There are 177 total prompts. I copied and three-hole punched the packet and put it in a portfolio folder that students kept in their desks. The students really enjoyed it and it definitely helped their response to text because they became very used to answering open-ended questions. For the beginning questions, I restated the question on the writing lines, but soon after removed this scaffold so students could answer the questions on their own. I hope you enjoy the discussions you have with your students as much as I do with mine!
